Microsoft Has Announced TypeScript 5.4: Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Boasting unique advantages over JavaScript, TypeScript is a popular programming language among the developer community. It just got even better with the release of TypeScript 5.4, which brings a host of helpful improvements and fresh features to the table.

In this guide, we’ll explore everything new with TypeScript 5.4, including the much-discussed “NoInfer” utility type, which can drastically improve TypeScript’s utility in specific situations.

All the Changes in TypeScript 5.4

Here’s a quick list of all the new additions included with TypeScript 5.4:

  • A new utility type named NoInfer
  • Smarter narrowing in closures
  • Declarations for Object.groupBy and Map.groupBy
  • Improved support for require() calls
  • Accurate import attribute checking
  • A quick fix for adding new parameters

That’s quite a lot to unpack. So, without further ado, let’s dig into the details of each change and see what they mean for TypeScript users.

The New Utility Type – NoInfer

We’ll kick off with arguably the biggest addition of TypeScript 5.4: the new utility type, known as NoInfer. Because it gives TypeScript the ability to prevent inferring type arguments from the data it has available, this utility type has a lot of potential value, albeit in very specific situations.

In general, TypeScript has historically been quite effective at inferring type arguments from the data it has. You can call a generic function, and TypeScript will often figure out the right type argument to infer.

The key word there is “often,” not always. The system isn’t perfect, and TypeScript sometimes makes mistakes, which can cause a lot of confusion and errors for the programmer to address.

NoInfer aims to fix this, letting you exclude certain types from inference, and preventing TypeScript from inferring an incorrect or invalid type.

An Example

Let’s look at a very basic example of how this works.

Say you have a generic function that simply relays the type of whichever value you pass into it, like this:

const returnWhatIPassedIn = <T>(value: T) => value;
const result = returnWhatIPassedIn("hi");”

Here, TypeScript will infer the “result” type to simply be “hi.”

However, if we include the new NoInfer utility type, we can change that outcome.

const returnWhatIPassedIn = <T>(value: NoInfer<T>) => value;
const result = returnWhatIPassedIn("hello");

Now, thanks to NoInfer, TypeScript won’t automatically infer anything about “value,” so it can’t give anything back for “result.” If we want to get a specific return type from this function, we have to explicitly provide it.

Why Is This Important?

From the simplistic example provided above, you might be left wondering why NoInfer is needed, or what kind of value it can provide.

Well, where this utility type really shines is in functions that TypeScript cannot easily infer. Imagine you have a function that has multiple possible candidates for type parameter inference, or multiple parts of the code that TypeScript might use to make its inference.

If you just leave the code as it is, you’ve got two possible outcomes. You either have to hope that TypeScript infers the desired parameter, or you have to do a tedious and awkward workaround, like adding a separate type parameter bounded by the existing one to control which parameter is inferred.

NoInfer makes the whole process simpler.

It lets you give a direct and clear signal to TypeScript to not make any automatic inferences, giving you total control over inference candidates. It’s ideal for those situations where you have multiple runtime parameters all calling back to the same type parameter, or when you have complicated functions with multiple inference candidates.

Improved Narrowing in Closures

The next big change in TypeScript 5.4 concerns the narrowing process. This is when TypeScript effectively works out an exact variable type. For example:

function uppercaseStrings(x: string | number) {
if (typeof x === "string") {
return x.toUpperCase();
}
}

In this example code, TypeScript can figure out that “x” is a “string.”

However, if we use an example of an expanded function, it’s a different story.

In an example like this one, TypeScript isn’t able to automatically assess that “url” is a genuine URL object, because it gets mutated elsewhere in the code. So, even though it seems obvious to the programmer how “url” should be treated, the system doesn’t react the same way.

This is just one example of how types aren’t always preserved in TypeScript beyond function closures. It causes a lot of hassle for programmers,         and it can lead to tedious and time-consuming adjustments of the code to get everything right.

Well, the 5.4 update aims to resolve these kinds of issues, once and for all, making the narrowing process much smarter, especially in non-hoisted functions. Now, whenever a parameter or “let variable" is in use in a non-hoisted function, TypeScript will automatically look for an ending assign point. If it finds one, it’ll narrow not only within that function but beyond it.

So, if we repeated the example above in 5.4, with its new and improving narrowing, it would work as desired.

Object.groupBy and Map.groupBy Declarations

TypeScript’s 5.4 update also brings fresh declarations to align with JavaScript’s recently added static methods, Object.groupBy, and Map.groupBy.

For those unfamiliar with this function, to use Object.groupBy, you need iterables, along with some sort of function with a key built into it. The key basically explains how elements should be sorted, and then Object.groupBy follows the rules of the key to create an object that sorts elements into their appropriate group.

For Map.groupBy, it’s a similar story, but with the end result being a map.

These static methods have proven useful for JavaScript development, and the 5.4 update brings their utility to the TypeScript userbase.

Improved Support for require() Calls

Long-term TypeScript users will be familiar with the language’s “bundler” moduleResolution option.

It’s designed to imitate modern bundlers, working out the right file that import paths refer to. However, it has its problems.

One of the downsides of the bundler moduleResolution option is how it always has to be aligned with “--module esnext.”

Because of that, it’s just not possible to make use of the “import ... = require()” code, which can be a problem in certain situations, especially if you’re working with conditional exports.

Well, with 5.4, require() can finally be used in conjunction with bundler, simply by setting the module to a brand-new option, entitled preserve. By using the “--module preserve” and “--moduleResolution” bundlers together, programmers should find it easier to precisely carry out module lookups and identify file import pathways.

Accurate Import Attribute Checks

Next up is a relatively small change, but a useful one all the same. TypeScript 5.4 will now check all import-related attributes and assertions against the ImportAttributes type. As a result, runtimes should become more precise and reliable in describing import attributes.

Rapid Solution for New Parameters

Another small change is that TypeScript 5.4 adds a rapid solution for adding a fresh parameter to any function that is called with an excess of arguments.

Let’s say you want to thread a new parameter or argument through a bunch of existing functions. Before 5.4, that could be a really awkward process. But now, it’s a lot easier and faster with this quick fix.

Improved Auto-Import Support

Prior to 5.4, TypeScript’s auto-import feature didn’t consider paths in “imports.” That was a problem, as users had to spend their own time and energy manually defining paths through their tsconfig.json.

Now, in 5.4 and beyond, that problem has been fixed. The auto-import feature now fully supports subpath imports, which should save programmers a lot of time and hassle.

Behavioral Changes

Lastly, there are a series of behavioral changes introduced in 5.4, which users may or may not notice, depending on how they use the language and the kind of code they work with.

Improved Accuracy in Conditional Type Constraints

Take a look at the following code:

Before 5.4, the “let first: true = x;” line would have produced an error. But the “let second: false = x;” line would not. Now, the second variable declaration is no longer allowed and will also result in an error, as TypeScript tightens its type constraints across branches.

Minimizing Intersections Between Variables and Primitive Types

TypeScript 5.4 also brings a stricter reduction in intersections between variables and primitive types. The specifics of how this works in practice will depend on how the variables and the primitives overlap.

Stronger Checks on Template Strings

TypeScript is now more precise and detailed than ever when verifying if strings can be assigned to placeholders (inside a string-type template). This should benefit programmers in the long run, though it may trigger code breaks when using constructs like conditionals, which may take some getting used to.

Type-Only Import Conflict Errors

In previous iterations, TypeScript has allowed a piece of code like this, provided the import to “Thing” referred to a type.

import { Thing } from “/path/";
let Thing = ABC;

Now, however, this kind of code will lead to an error message along these lines:

’Thing’ conflicts with local value, so must be declared with an import.

This is to prevent situations where single-file compilers automatically assume the import can be dropped.

Additional Enum-Related Restrictions

TypeScript 5.4 also delivers a range of new restrictions related to enums. Specifically, enum values now need to be exactly the same in order to remain compatible when known. Additionally, enum members can no longer have the names “Infinity” or “-Infinity.” “NaN” has also been removed from the list of allowed names.

What Do These Changes Mean for TypeScript Users?

The changes introduced in TypeScript 5.4 will mean different things for different users. It all depends on how you use this language and what kind of projects you work on.

For some, the introduction of “NoInfer,” coupled with the other changes, will have a dramatic effect, helping them be more productive and streamlined in their coding. Others may not notice the effects all that much in their work.

In general, though, these changes are all designed to make TypeScript a more reliable, effective, and useful programming language, addressing a range of known issues that had been flagged by the community. As a result, no matter how you’re using it, you should find TypeScript 5.4 a superior option to 5.3 and prior versions.

What’s Next for TypeScript?

Like other programming languages, TypeScript is effectively in a constant state of evolution, with more updates and iterations planned for the months and years ahead. In fact, TypeScript 5.5 is already in the beta stage and scheduled for a June 2024 release.

Like 5.4, 5.5 will bring even more new changes.

We know, for instance, that deprecated options and behaviors like “charset,” “noImplicitUseStrict,” and “importsNotUsedAsValues” will all return hard error messages in 5.5, and 5.4 is the last version of TypeScript to accept these options without providing hard errors.

The 5.5 version is also set to bring inferred type predicates, regular expression syntax checking, and improved control flow narrowing, among other additions and changes.

In the meantime, TypeScript fans and users will want to get used to the new quirks and additions introduced in 5.4, like experimenting with the NoInfer utility type, along with the Map.groupBy and Object.groupBy declarations.

From low-level coding of operating system kernels to high powered backend design, the flexibility of Rust means that it can be used on a wide-variety of devices, and for any number of tasks. The language also allows its users the freedom to design without safety rails or even language limits.

Take, for example, Unsafe Rust, the programming language for pros. When the standard Rust language isn’t quite able to express a concept or execute a process, Unsafe Rust exists as a viable alternative. Provided users are comfortable with ensuring the safety of their own code, the language greatly expands the realm of development possibilities.

Rust also plays well with other languages. The “Efficient C Bindings” feature allows the language to operate in conjunction with the C language. APIs can be communicated with thanks to a foreign function interface, without compromising Rust’s speed or memory safety.

Finally, Rust is more than capable of working on multiple platforms. Be it Windows, Linux, Unix, or even MacOS, the language can be used to manage configurations and develop software on any operating system, while still being able to negotiate the particulars of each. The Rust Ecosystem

Thanks to its open-source nature, Rust has built a welcoming and well-established community. Newcomers to the language will have no problem finding the help they need, thanks to various forums and Subreddits.

What’s more, the community also boasts extensive libraries of toolkits and pre-written scripts, well over 60,000 by this stage. “Crates.io” acts as a resource point for users looking to navigate and find libraries. These databases not only provide a wealth of information and toolchains, but also allow for users of other languages to make the jump to Rust more effectively.

Rust’s toolchains are installed via through the installer “rustup.” Within these installations, the command line tool Cargo allows users to better integrate the new toolchain into existing frameworks, be that managing dependencies or running tests. These fundamental additions make it easier for the community to get started on programming, without having to reinvent the wheel.

The Limitations

Nothing is perfect after all, and Rustaceans will be the first to admit that about their beloved language. Even if the many benefits and customizability make programming in Rust a delight, there are still occasional problems that pop up.

Rust’s big memory safety feature, the compiler, can also be a hindrance to new programmers or those coming from dynamically typed ones. The compiler won’t start up the code until all errors are addressed. The community has done much to make these error messages more helpful, but it can be tough for those wanting to see at least part of their code at work.

This statically typed compilation makes it difficult to partially design or prototype solutions for testing, as all variables need to be considered before compilation can take place. Reliability and safety come at a price.

The language itself is also quite new and not as widely adopted as C++ or Python. There are fewer systems that run Rust, and the libraries and forums, though welcoming and comprehensive, are limited in comparison to other programming languages.

That said, for such a young language, Rust’s dedicated userbase will most likely prove the solid foundation that sees the language move from strength to strength in the coming decades.

In the grand scheme of things, Google’s latest technological tool is still brand-new, yet to be put through its paces or have its full potential realized. The technology launched with bold hopes and promise, which doesn’t always live up to the reality.

It’s hoped that AI Overview’s reliance on content to generate its responses will create exposure for various sites, and recommend many businesses. Citations, location-based links, and SEO processes would, in theory, give these pages more views, clickthrough rates, business, and ultimately remuneration, by being involved in the process.

The technology also provides opportunities for businesses to promote themselves through SEO and location-based optimization. It’s too early to say how many businesses will engage in this strategy, so only time will tell.

Google is promising that clickthrough rates and engagements are higher for sites that allow AI Overviews to use their information, but has yet to provide any substantial data to prove that’s the case.

The Dark Side of AI Overviews

Despite its limited release, AI Overviews has had anything but a smooth release. Many responses have been inaccurate and downright hazardous at times. Users have been told to add glue to their pizza for extra thickness and that there are no countries that begin with the letter “K.”

This is only the tip of the iceberg, and many sites and businesses have raised concerns about AI Overview’s potential for negatively impacting them.

Plagiarism

AI, by its very nature, relies on the intellectual property of others, and often obtains this without their knowledge or consent. Google has been accused multiple times, by companies like Reddit, of scraping data to bolster its machine learning tools. Those it takes from are seldom attributed or adequately compensated.

Though AI Overviews ostensibly cites its sources and links to relevant pages, there’s concern that such a tool will either steal the hard work of content creators, or misrepresent information through a quick summarization.

No Clickthrough

People in a hurry will most often settle for the site that gives them the information they need the fastest. AI Overview promises websites and businesses increased clickthrough rates through references and exposure, but the opposite is in fact true. Most users will be satisfied with the AI-generated answer, not bothering to follow through to the various websites listed. Convenience trumps quality.

Google’s new AI tool takes the hard work, research, and expertise of countless websites. They may cite them, but the lack of clickthrough has potentially devastating impacts on site engagement and revenue.

AI’s Many Flaws

AI’s training on limited data sets, and its fundamental construction as a statistically predictive tool, rather than actual thought, means that it’ll remain fundamentally unreliable for years to come. There have been many instances of AI tools “hallucinating” facts, such as Chat GPT fabricating legal cases for lawyer Steven Schwartz.

What’s more, AI Overview’s RAG features, designed to fact check any generated content against existing sources online can itself be unreliable by pulling from factually incorrect sources. A recent example includes listing Barack Hussein Obama as the first Muslim president of the United States.

Not only is this something categorically untrue, but based off an Oxford University Press-published book chapter titled “Barack Hussein Obama: America’s First Muslim President?” The veracity of online sources is something the tool still struggles with.

These flaws, both funny and frustrating, can also do much to undermine trust in tools like AI Overviews. Its recommendations and links by extension may also be placed into doubt. This, in turn, can lead to a negative impact on businesses and websites that are linked to or cited by Google.

As it expands in scope, AI Overviews will focus more and more on sites that design content specifically to appeal to its algorithm. SEO is increasingly crucial to ensuring relevance with search engines. AI tools favor content that’s current, backlinked, and optimized.

This requires time, money, and specialists to complete, something that not every business can afford to supply. Tools like AI Overviews make it more difficult for small to medium enterprises to gain the exposure they desperately need for business, unless they can dance to the right tune. Opt Out

Google makes it clear that websites and companies can choose not to participate in being featured by AI Overviews. If you don’t want your brand to feature in misleading material, or have your content misrepresented or unfairly compensated, then you can opt out at any time.

Unfortunately, everyone is signed up by default, so you’ll have to opt out manually via Google Search Central. What makes things worse, is that fully divorcing yourself from the Google Index will mean that your site or won’t show up in any more Google searches. It’s drastic, but definitely an option.

Meet the Challenge

Removing a site from the Google index will be a bridge too far for many. In that case, it can be helpful to better optimize your site for tools like AI Overviews.

Here are some things you can do:

  • Provide SEO content with relevant keywords and topics for your business.
  • AI Overviews relies on content that provides quick overviews on topics. Try to generate content that does so.
  • Keep any content frequently updated every year. AI seldom uses content older than this.
  • AI favors content with visuals and clear backlinking. Make sure your site has content with both.
  • Be sure to answer potential user queries in your content. Most Google searches are people looking for a quick answer to a question.

An Uncertain Future

For all its touted benefits and conveniences, it’s clear that Google’s AI Overviews will bring as much upheaval and harm to businesses as it will any good. It’s best to be aware of the limitations of this technology, and the way it could harm your website’s engagement, before deciding on the best course of action.

Why Has OpenAI Partnered with Reddit?

On 16 May, Reddit announced via blog post that it had partnered with tech giant OpenAI in a mutually beneficial deal for both parties. Reddit will provide OpenAI with access to its valuable wealth of data generated by its millions of users and will receive enhanced AI models and capabilities in return.

This isn’t the first time Reddit has made its data available to a big tech company (they partnered with Google in late February of this year), and it reflects and industry-wide trend of training and fine-tuning AI products with more comprehensive access to information.

But why did the partnership happen, and what do both parties stand to gain from it? Read on to find out more.

A Growing Technology

The worldwide market for AI shows no signs of slowing down. In 2023 alone, it was estimated to be worth over $200 billion, with that number only set to grow in the coming years. What was once considered a novelty way to generate pictures and create realistic chats for many users is becoming increasingly integral to the business and software landscape.

AI is still in its infancy though, and needs regularly updated sources and data to learn from. For that reason, many AI companies require access to user generated data. Data scraping has been a widely condemned aspect of machine learning tools, and its implications on copyright and data privacy are still a hotly contested and ongoing subject.

You only have to look at the recent controversy surrounding Scarlett Johansen and the alleged plagiarism of her voice with the “Sky” chat voiceover function.

Whatever the long-term implications, it’s clear that AI is now here to stay, and many companies are trying to determine their place in this new technological world.

Reddit and OpenAI

Reddit’s partnership with OpenAI may be news, but certainly didn’t come as a surprise in company or industry circles. In February 2024, Reddit made its API available to Google in a deal reportedly worth $60 million.

The industry has also seen tech companies partner with AI companies before. In March 2024, Adobe joined with Microsoft to connect its Experience Cloud workflows with Microsoft’s Copilot and 365 to enhance generative-AI capabilities and aiding marketing and user insights.

Reddit has pre-emptively addressed the concerns of its userbase by stating that both API and developer terms will remain unchanged. These terms state, among other things, that Reddit’s API can’t be used for commercial purposes without its express consent. It’s been known to guard this very carefully, especially with scraping attempts from Google.

Data has always been where the true value of social media platforms lie. The better one knows an audience, the better they can be targeted and the more effectively an AI can be trained to serve them.

Both Reddit and OpenAI are excited about the merger. Brad Lightcap stated that OpenAI is thrilled about Reddit providing “uniquely timely and relevant information” and the possibilities that its tools can bring to Redditors.

The Official Reasons

As stated in the original blog post, Reddit has cited three ways that it’s partnership with OpenAI will benefit both communities:

  • OpenAI tools like the phenomenally popular ChatGPT will now have access to the API and constantly updating content of Reddit. It’s hoped that this access will provide ChatGPT users with more accurate and up-to-date information on a wealth of topics that Redditors love to discuss.
  • The partnership will also allow for OpenAI’s powerful machine learning tools to be made available to Redditors and mods. It’ll provide an established AI platform for Reddit to build off of.
  • Advertising opportunities for both parties. OpenAI will be able to advertise DALL-E, CHAT GPT and other tools on Reddit, while the aggregator site will be able to do the same in return.

Many Reasons to Partner

In addition to the officially stated reasons for the partnership, there are a whole host of other considerations and benefits that both companies stand to benefit from.

Financial

Earlier this year Reddit made its IPO, and became a publicly listed company on the stock exchange. Although the value of these stocks had been flagging slightly in recent months, the announcement of the partnership sent the value of the stocks up 15%. All in all, the company is looking strong, with a 66% increase in stock value since IPO.

Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman recognizes the potential value that its vast data reserves can provide. In the statement on the partnership, he’s quoted as saying: “Reddit has become one of the internet’s largest open archives of authentic, relevant, and always up-to-date human conversations about anything and everything.”

The partnership aligns with Reddit’s stated goals and endeavors of looking for ways to monetize its data and content. It remains to be seen how Redditors will react to this handling of their thoughts and opinions.

For OpenAI and Reddit, the advertising potential for both parties is vast. The extensive userbases of each provide fertile ground for targeted advertising opportunities, and on-site and in-tool promotion of products and services.

Competition

As stated earlier, many companies are on a mission to integrate AI tools and capabilities into their software and sites. Companies like Google and Microsoft have the benefit of their search engine metrics and user data from their software suite, while Meta has access to data from social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook to train its AI.

From this angle it’s easy to see that OpenAI wants to keep one step ahead of the competition by using the data of Reddit.

These tools will only grow in sophistication as the years pass, and it becomes necessary for companies without a social media platform or search engine to partner with companies that can provide them. Just because OpenAI is leading the charge in machine learning currently doesn’t mean that it’ll remain that way forever, especially if the competition keeps finding new ways to move ahead.

The Value of Redditors

One of Reddit’s keys to success has always been the diversity of its userbase. There are thousands upon thousands of Redditors, all with their own thoughts and opinions on a variety of topics, ranging from mainstream politics to obscure fandoms. There seems to be a dedicated Subreddit for just about anything.

Language interaction is therefore a primary focus of this partnership. The next generation of AI technology needs to be trained on language and mannerisms that more closely mimic those of everyday conversation.

While current AI capabilities may be sufficient, companies like OpenAI know that they need to refine their tools in both capability and accuracy to stay relevant as the nascent AI industry advances. The key to this will, paradoxically, be the human factor. If AI can’t present data in a relatable way to its userbase, then it won’t succeed.

Reddit’s Size

On any given day, Reddit has approximately 62.24 million active users online. Naturally, system administrators and Subreddit mods struggle to handle so many users and chats at any one time. Many Subreddits make use of bots in order to help police and curate content, while administrators make use of processes to automate certain routine tasks.

The ratio of users to management will always be skewed, but this number is only set to grow with an increase in the platform’s popularity. OpenAI’s partnership with Reddit provides the site with powerful tools that can benefit both Redditors and administrators.

While the specifics of these tools are still not entirely specified, it’s known that that they’ll be instrumental in helping with automating tasks and moderating groups. Thread information could be more easily explainable to users with the help of AI tools. Content can be summarized and replies generated with machine assistance.

In addition, OpenAI’s powerful language functions, which have already been a key feature of ChatGPT 4’s release can be used to more effectively translate Reddit posts into a variety of different languages. Refined and nuanced translations have been a major focus of machine learning tools, and the colloquial grounds of Reddit will prove to be both an opportunity and challenge for OpenAI, and a benefit for everyday Redditors.

An Interesting Future Awaits

It remains to be seen what the long-term impacts of the Reddit and OpenAI partnership will be, and whether the userbases of both will accept it. What is clear are the many benefits to doing so. AI is becoming more advanced with each passing year, but its machine learning needs more comprehensive data sets in order to do so.

Reddit’s unique userbase provides the perfect opportunity for OpenAI to train the next generation of AI tools, while lending its own existing tools and capabilities to the social media platform. The only true measure of success, though, will be time.
