The client, a developer of advanced home surveillance and assistance ecosystems, sought to enhance their range of smart devices, which include doorbells, home surveillance systems, and voice-activated assistants powered by AI. They aimed to improve home and neighborhood security by using video and audio data to automatically analyze and process incoming information, providing users with real-time notifications of any suspicious activity. This required a robust system capable of efficiently handling and analyzing large volumes of video and audio data to identify potential threats and ensure timely alerts.

Our team developed a comprehensive processing pipeline for both video and audio data streams from the client's devices. The video processing component focused on target object detection, identifying people, pets, and other relevant objects. The audio processing component was divided into two modules: wake word detection and target sound detection. Wake word detection enabled the system to recognize specific keywords that activate user commands. Target sound detection was designed to identify critical sounds such as a baby crying, gunshots, or glass shattering. To train the model for custom wake word detection, we collected a diverse dataset using Amazon Mechanical Turk, ensuring the system could recognize various accents and voice timbres. The interface was meticulously set up, and audio recordings were filtered and assessed for quality before proceeding with preprocessing, modeling, and evaluation.

results

The implemented solution effectively processes video and audio feeds from the client's recording devices. The video processing module detects individuals in the video feed and assesses whether they belong to the group of authorized users. The audio processing module activates upon hearing custom voice commands like "Okay Google" or "Hey Siri" and includes target sound detection for critical sounds such as baby cries, gunshots, and glass breaking. These modules work in unison to send immediate alerts to users, notifying them of any disturbances or potential security threats. This enhanced system not only improves the security of homes but also provides peace of mind to users through timely and accurate notifications.
