Enhancing Public Transportation Systems with an IoT-Powered Traffic Monitoring System
problem
We were approached by a representative of the municipal public transport department at one of the biggest cities in Central America. The Mexican government regulates private bus companies to ensure quality transportation services through Service Level Agreements (SLAs), detailing factors like bus frequency and route duration. The main challenge faced by the client was in ensuring compliance with these SLAs to enhance public transportation efficiency.

The Mexican government regulates private bus companies to ensure quality transportation services through Service Level Agreements (SLAs), detailing factors like bus frequency and route duration. The main challenge faced by the client was in ensuring compliance with these SLAs to enhance public transportation efficiency.
solution
To address this challenge, we developed a Traffic Monitoring System leveraging IoT infrastructure and WiFi-enabled devices installed on public buses. Each bus is equipped with a WiFi device, enabling real-time tracking of its position along the route. Our system utilizes sensors placed on roads to collect data, providing the transport control center with visual insights into SLA compliance for each route. With individual sensors transmitting data every 10 seconds and a month-long data span to consider, efficient big data storage solutions were crucial. Additionally, interpreting SLA terms in numerical terms presented its own set of challenges, requiring meticulous attention to detail. The Traffic Monitoring System comprises a comprehensive set of features, including a bus route and schedule builder covering more than 400 routes, along with a control panel displaying SLA compliance metrics.

results
Through the implementation of our Traffic Monitoring System, the municipal public transport department gained enhanced visibility and control over SLA compliance across more than 400 bus routes. This improved oversight facilitates proactive decision-making, allowing authorities to optimize bus schedules, reduce delays, and ultimately enhance the efficiency of public transportation in Mexico City. Furthermore, the hierarchical data representation ensures that stakeholders can access and analyze relevant data with ease, driving informed decision-making and continuous improvement in the city's transportation infrastructure.
