Our client is pioneering the world s first drone-based delivery service, aiming to revolutionize delivery logistics by significantly reducing costs and transit times in a vast market. Having launched the inaugural fully operational drone delivery service in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 2017, they emerged as the frontrunner in the race to deploy an autonomous on-demand delivery service. Despite the prevalence of drone deliveries, controlled remotely by pilots, the client sought to innovate further by developing drones handled entirely over the cloud from a central Control Center, eliminating the need for on-site pilots.

Upon engaging our services, the client had an initial project version, tasking us with developing the second production-ready iteration. Our focus shifted towards enhancing features and restructuring the architecture. A primary challenge was transitioning from a monolithic to a microservices architecture, ensuring swift connections and transactions for real-time functionality and system resilience during critical scenarios. We revamped the infrastructure, enabling the system to adapt to various operational conditions seamlessly. The backend, developed using Python (Django framework) and Postgres, consists of interconnected components utilizing WebSockets for communication and Redis for task processing, all containerized with Docker and deployed on AWS.

Addressing scenarios like emergency landings and extreme weather conditions, we devised specialized solutions. The software facilitates two delivery modes: merchant-to-client and post-to-client. Four key features were developed: Advanced Route Management enabling customizable flight routes, Smart Way-Points for defining specific actions, Reports offering mission insights, and Automatic Preflight Check ensuring flight readiness and safety verification before takeoff.
