Accelerating COVID-19 Testing with Secure, Scalable Digital Solutions

The COVID-19 pandemic required the Government of the Netherlands to rapidly implement an effective population-wide testing system. With strict deadlines in place, they needed a secure and scalable digital solution that would allow for widespread testing while ensuring the protection of sensitive personal data. Interactivated Solutions was approached to design, develop, test, and deploy the system under an extremely compressed timeline. In addition to facilitating large-scale nationwide testing, the solution needed to support high-profile public events, ensuring thousands of attendees could be tested efficiently before gathering in large numbers.

We collaborated closely with government agencies to design an intuitive and efficient user experience that simplified the data collection process for test subjects. Vue.js was used to build the front-end, enabling seamless communication with other systems via API. The workflow included interactions between healthcare professionals, laboratory systems, and testing sites, with integrated scanning and printing devices to optimize processing. Security measures were a top priority, with compliance to government - mandated data protection standards throughout the development process. The testing and QA plan was tailored to meet the unique requirements of the project, ensuring a smooth and error-free deployment within the required timeframe.

The efficiency of the system was instrumental in allowing the Netherlands to safely resume large public events, including hosting the Eurovision Song Contest in 2022, which was only made possible due to the system’s ability to conduct rapid and secure testing. The platform was also leveraged for several major football matches, enabling tens of thousands of attendees to be tested before entering the venues on event days. By delivering this critical solution on time, we helped enable essential pandemic response efforts while also supporting the return to public life, allowing the government to implement safe gathering measures without compromising public health.
